Parents

Johannes SMIT {M} [P8311] = Catharina Magdalena MARES1 {F} [P139]

Married 18 November 1743, Drakenstein2

Johannes

Christened 4 August 1709, Cape Town3
Died January 17794
Originally thought to be the youngest child.
Born between 1710 - 1711, Cape of Good Hope (date assumed) died January 1779 will dated 4 January 1779 and filed 28 January 1779
Notes: In their joint will of 1779, the couple is described as: den búrger Johannes Smith Jacobusz: en desselfs huisvrouw Catharina Magdalena Mares.
Their property is left to the children of their brothers and sisters (met versoek van 't úijtterste ben[e]ficirie der neefkens) with a specific bequest of 200 Rixdollars to Floris Johannes Slabbert, soontje van Johannes Slabert Gideonsz:
De Villiers / Pama gives the marriage date as 29.11.1743. If this date is correct, then the parties were presumably born before circa 1723.
This means that Johannes Smit cannot be the youngest child of Jacobus Smit and E lizabeth Slabbert as given in DeV/P and, given the fact that Elisabeth Slabbert , in her will of 1756, lists Jan Smit at the head of her children, his most likely date of birth would appear to be around 1710 or 1711.
Johannes Smit and Catharina Mares were witnesses to the baptism of their niece Aletta Catharina Smit, daughter of his brother, Alewijn Smit and Engela Helena van Niekerk on 30th July 1769 at Swartland.
