Hector was from der Kust and may have been born there circa 1658. This could be either the Coromandel Coast or the Malabar Coast. He was 14 when sold as a slave in 1673.¹

In January 1673 Hector van der Kust was sold by Jan Jacobs Backer to Jeronimus Cruse, for Rds 65.^2,3
