Slave Transactions

In 1680 Anthony was sold, perhaps by Reijnier de Groot, to Dirk Coetzee.²
On 11 April 1686 Reijnier de Groot, demanded payment from Dirk Coetzee for Anthony, whom he had purchased in 1680, but had not paid for. Coetsé promised to pay within a year, however if he failed to do so, then Anthonij would become the property of Jeronimus Cruse.²

[S418] Anna J. Böeseken, Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape 1658-1700, p.144. 11.4.1686: Anthony, a slave sold in 1680 to Dirk Coché (signature Coetse) for Rds. 50. The slave had not yet been paid for and Reijnier de Groot, sailing on the Waterland, demanded payment. Coetse promised that he would pay within a year. The money was to be paid to Jeronimus Cruse. If the money was not paid, the slave would be taken over by Cruse.
