|Vrijswart[in]*||Before 25 March 1698, Claas van Macassar became a Free Black, in Dutch Vrijswart, a person formerly enslaved, who having purchased his freedom (or had it purchased for him) was permitted to farm, become a trader, or work for others. Although free blacks were nominally equal to free burgers, in practice this was not the case.1|
