BirthOrigin*Carel was from Bruges and was perhaps born there circa 1630.1 
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 13 March 1658, Carel Melin was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as having been a sailor on the ship, Het Wapen van Hollant.2
