Lang was from Malabar Coast and was perhaps born there in 1674/75. He was said to be 17 or 18 years old in 1692.¹

Slave Transactions

On 21 June 1692 Lang Onderwe(e)g van Malabar was gifted by Claas Voshol, to Christiaan Freser, for the duration of Freser's life, as an acknowledgement of the friendship between the two settlers. Lang Onderw(e)g's freedom on Freser's death was not stipulated as indicated by Böeseken, but as Hattingh suggests may have been implicit in the gift.^2,3

[S606] J.L. (Leon) Hattingh, "A.J. Böeseken se Addendum van Kaapse slawe-verkoopstransaksies: Foute en regstellings", Kronos (Foute en regstellings) 9 (1984): Onderaan bladsy 160 van die addendum kom die volgende blaps voor. Dit is gedateer 21.6.1692 en lees:

"Lang Onderwe(e)g from Malabar (17/18), sold by Claas Voshol, skipper on Mydrecht, to Christiaan Freser. No price mentioned. The slave was to serve Freser as long as his master lived, but would be freed when Freser died".

Hierdie is ook nie 'n ten volle korrekte en betroubare weergawe van die oorspronklike document nie. Die betrokke slaaf word byvoorbeeld op grond van die twee persone se onderlinge vriendskap as 'n geskenk aangebied en daarom is daar nie sprake van 'n verkoopprys nie. Die voorwaarde was slegs dat hy nooit weer verkoop sal word nie, maar nie dat hy vrygestel moet word wanneer sy nuwe eienaar te sterwe kom nie. Alhoewel vrystelling by implikasie nie uitgesluit was nie, is dit 'n ongevraagde toevoeging. Die addendum behoort nie vertolking by voorbaat te verskaf nie.. Hereinafter cited as "Foute en regstellings."
