BirthOrigin*Hans was from Angeln and was perhaps born there circa 1636. Until the 19th century, the area belonged primarily to Denmark. But, in terms of ethnic and linguistic heritage, a mixed German/Danish population evolved. Denmark lost Schleswig to Austria and Prussia in 1864 as a result of the second war of Schleswig. In 1920, following Germany's defeat in World War I, a plebiscite was held to determine which areas should return to Danish control. As a result of the plebiscite, much of Schleswig returned to Denmark, but Angeln remained in Germany. [Wikipedia]2,3,4
Marriage Bann*Marriage banns for Hans Ras and Catharina Ustings were published on 19 August 1662 de Caep de Goede Hoop.3
Marriage*Hans Ras married Catharina Ustings on 3 September 1662 Cabo de Boa Esperança. Within hours of her marriage to Hans Ras, Trijn must have been wondering what she had let herself in for. On the wagon journey from Table Bay to Hans' farm on the Liesbeeck river at Rondebosch, the wagon drivers - Frans Gerrit of Uijthoorn and Thieleman Hendricksz, both drunk - tried to outrun each other with one wagon ultimately being forced off the track. In the ensuing argument about who was responsible Hendricksz', much to Ras' annoyance, resorted to foul language (scheltewoorden) and a fight broke out. Hendricksz stabbed Ras twice, breaking the blade of his knife in Ras' ribs in the second blow.5,2
Death*Hans Ras died between March 1671 and April 1672, apparently from the lingering effects of an injury sustained in an attack by a lion early in 1671.2

Arrival* In March 1658, Hans Ras arrived at the Cape and, on the 13th, was granted burgher status.

Within short order he became part of the group that was granted the farm Groenevelt on the east side of the Liesbeeck river at Rondebosch. The group included Harman Remajenne, but the enterprise failed and the land was divided by the authorities into portions which were granted to invididuals. One portion of 20 morgen was granted to Jacob Cloete(n) which he transferred to Hans Ras on the 11th June, 1660. The land included a barn and house (schuur, en woonhuijs), and this is likely the property to which Hans would bring Trijn in 1662. This farm became the core of present day Rondebosch, the area including Belmont, Camp Ground, College and Main Roads and is home to Bishop's Preparatory School and the town hall.

In 1664 Hans purchased 11 morgen, 400 sq roods north of Belmont Road on the eastern banks of the Liesbeeck. He bought it from Frans Gerrits of Uijthoorn, one of the combatants of his wedding day and popularly known as "Frans de Lapper".2

NotesIn 1664, Hans Ras and the other farmers along the Liesbeeck river were instructed to provide maintenance to the road between the area and the Fort (present day Main Road); Ras being given the additional responsibility of maintaining the bridge that spanned the river at his property. The bridge was described by Governor Wagenaer as "de brugh van Hans Ras".2
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 13 March 1658, Hans Ras was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. he was recorded as a former soldier on Het Wapen van Holland.11
Crime and relatedIn July 1660, Hans Ras purchased stock directly from Hottentots, a practise outlawed by the VOC. In March 1667, he was again accused of doing so, but was acquitted.2
In 1661, Hans Ras , along with his friend Harman Ramajenne, was in trouble with the authorities for visiting female slaves at Bosheuwel. Margaret Cairns describes Ramajenne as a "somewhat unsatisfactory freeburger".2
