    Jan, ook bekend as Jan Hoefsmit (sy beroep) was van Oldenburgh en is gebore c1637. Hy was aan die Kaap sedert 1662 en het in die VOC gedien as Onderscheeps Korporaal, maar het later vryburger geword. Sy plaas was Krommerivier, nou deel van Stellenbosch self. Jan trou Oktober 1671 met Lysbeth Jansz van Amsterdam, maar hulle is geskei (Mei 1684) nadat sy skuldig bevind is aan owerspel en na 'n tughuis in Batavia gestuur is (C500 p.1104 van 26.12.1684).
