Slave TransactionsOn 17 July 1688 Flora van der Kust Coromandel was sold by Adrian van Reede to Johannes van Engelen, for Rds. 50.7
On 7 May 1699 Philip van Batavia was sold by Adrian van Reede to Jacob Krebs, for Rds. 130. Given the high price paid, it is worth considering that Philip was a skilled shoe-maker.8
Slave EmancipationsOn 31 May 1706 de Caep de Goede Hoop, Anna Maria Dominicus, aged 32, and her 5-year-old daughter Elsje Katrina Beu, owned by Adriaen van Rheede, were purchased into freedom by her future husband and her daughter's father, Claus Beust. A condition of the manumission was that Beust was to be responsible for the future care of his daughter.9
