BirthOrigin*Magdalena was from Bengal and was perhaps born there in 1662/63. 'Van Bengale' or 'from Bengal' was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal.1,2
Marriage*She married Jan van Tarnaten on 9 September 1687 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.3

Names in the record, in publications, etc.21 May 1683, the name of Magdalena was written in the record as Magdalena.4
Slave TransactionsOn 5 March 1677 Magdalena van Bengalen was sold by Gouverneur Johan Bax to Martinus van Bachem, for Rds. 60.5
On 21 May 1683 Magdalena van Bengalen was sold by Martinus van Bachem to Albert van Breugel, for Rds. 60.6
Slave EmancipationsOn 27 May 1687 the freedom of Magdalena van Bengalen was purchased from Elsie van Suurwaerden for Rds. 100 and most likely paid for by herself or her soon-to-be husband. I have assumed this is the same woman purchased by Albert van Breugel, husband of Elsje Seurwaerden, in 1683 Jan van Ternaten.1
