Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)On 20 March 1656 Jan Zacharias was enumerated in the muster roll, as a soldier.3
On 31 May 1657 Jan Zacharias was enumerated in the muster roll, as a soldier earning f 9 per month.7
On 15 February 1658 Jan Zacharias was enumerated in the muster roll among the freemen, but in service as cook to the company bookkeeper Roeloff de Man, and his assistants.
On 1 March 1661 Jan Zacharias was enumerated in the muster roll, he was recorded as from Amsterdam, cadet.8
On 1 April 1662 Jan Zacharias was enumerated in the muster roll, he was recorded as from Amsterdam, cadet.9
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 1 October 1657, Jan Zacharias was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher.10
Slave EmancipationsOn 6 July 1658 Maria van Bengale was purchased into freedom by Jan Zacharias from Pieter van der Stael, in order to marry her. Receipt of the purchase price was acknowledged, but the amount was not specified. The couple were married 15 days later.11,12,13
