Slave Birth - Company OwnedChristoffel Snijman was born in bondage before 9 March 1669 and was owned by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), de Caep de Goede Hoop. His birth was subsequently legitimised by the marriage of his mother to his step-father, Anthonij Jansz van Bengale, who later adopted him. Legtimacy was alwas conferred at the Cape when the mother married, even if her spouse was not the biological child of the father.4,5
BaptismAll the available evidence points to the fact the child baptised on 9 March 1669 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop, whose mother was named in the record as Groote Catrijn grew up to be Christoffel Snijman. Mansell Upham, in his article, In Hevigen Woede . . . Earliest recorded female bandiet at the Cape of Good Hope - A Study in Upward Mobility in Volumes 3/97 and 4/97 of Capensis, makes a strong case that this was so, including that there was only one woman known as such at the Cape, and she later married Antonij van Bengale. Christoffel Snijman would refer to the couple as mijn ouders. Furthermore, the witness at the baptism, named as Angila, was most likely the woman known variously as Angila, Angela, and Ansiela, etc., a close friend of Groote Catrijn.4,5
Marriage*Christoffel Snijman married Marguerite-Thérèse de Savoye, daughter of Jacques de Savoye and Christine du Pont, before 10 December 1690 de Caep de Goede Hoop.6,5

  6. [S21] Date estimated by compiler, Delia Robertson and, unless there is corroborating information, should not be considered as anything more than a guide - based on baptism of apparent first child, Jacobus Christoffel. If he had been born out of wedlock the baptism record would most likely have described him as "onegt".
