Birth*Louis Fourie was born circa 1669 in Pontaix, Dauphiné, France, in assistance records as he travelled to escape the persecution of Huguenots, Louis’ place of origin was said to be Livorn. However Livorn was a place of refuge for fleeing Huguenots, many from Dauphine assembled there and then travelled further, so it is possible he was indeed born in Pontaix which was in the same region of Dauphine. The date is estimated and should only be used as a guide.1

Marriage*He married Suzanne Cordier, daughter of Louis Cordier and Francoise Martinet, circa 1694 Cabo de Goede Hoop.2,3,4

Marriage*He married Anna Jourdaan, daughter of Pierre Jourdan de Cabriere and Anna Fouché, circa 1716.5

Death*He died in 1750 De Slangerivier, Wellington, Cape Colony.2

Assistance* On 27 September 1687, at Schaffhausen, Switzerland, , while travelling into exile following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Louis Fourie received aid in the amount of fl. 02 kr. 40 from his church. In the record his place of origin is described as Livron, Dauphine. Now Livron-sur-Drôme it was a Huguenot safehaven in the region from attacks by government dragoons. So this may not have been Louis’ place of birth.6,7

NotesIn the 2021 edition of the Huguenot Bulletin Ockert Johann Fourie contributed an important paper about Louis Fourie, viz. Faurite to Fourie — What's in a Name? which offers a well-researched, and in my view, conclusive argument that his last name was originally Faurite.

Part of establishing this was tracing the route the young man took across Europe from Livorn (Livron) in the then Dauphiné province, now Drôme Department, via Schaffhausen, Erlangen, Franfort-sur-le-Main to Amsterdam. Finally, the record indicates he sailed on the Borsenburg to the Cape. There are no records of a separate individual named Louis Faurite at the Cape.

I am incorporating the evidence gleaned in this research into the profile page of this progenitor.

I would like to thank Gawie Groenewald for bringing the article it to my attention and sharing it with me.7
