[S645] E-mails from Corney Keller to Delia Robertson, October 2011-November 2013 "My thanks to Corney Keller for providing updated info on Gabriel Joosten by email, viz: In your profile of Gabriel Joosten, his birthplace is given as Nederland. He was from Sint-Winoksbergen in the current day French Flanders. At the time of his birth it was under Spanish rule but ceded to France in 1668. It still falls in the Dutch language region and Dutch-Flemish is still spoken there among locals.
    His origin is recorded in the verbatim copies of VOC employees at the Cape (Muster Rolls of officers and men at the Cape), VC 39, volume 2, pp. 46, 48 and 59 representing the years 1663, 1664 and 1665 after which he is not mentioned again.

Provisional skipper, Joost van Stappen, and junior merchant (very ill), Paulus de Haulier. Had put back to de Veer, where the skipper, Cornells Drelingcourt, was removed from the vessel by the Directors in consequence of the complaints of the crew, the chief officer being appointed in his place. Many had deserted at de Veer Brought 20 dead and 50 sick of scurvy. All more or less affected. Orders issued for the refreshment of the sick.
    July 26th. Fine weather for the vessel;
    July 27th. Same weather. The Commander proceeds on board to make the usual visitation. Found everything fairly well. The vessel, however, had suffered very much from the storms. Will be obliged to remain here some time.
